2024-2025 Fake Tax Refund Scam Exposed: Fraudsters Submit Bogus Documents with Auditors’ Help
The Central Government has reported that there has been a tax refund fraud in various states of India using fake documents with the help of auditors.
According to this, it has been reported that 22,500 people have submitted fake documents and submitted fake accounts worth up to Rs 550 crore and have received tax refunds worth about Rs 120 crore.
As an extension of this, the Income Tax Department has conducted raids at 18 places in Tamil Nadu:
The Central Government has announced that the places where the raids will be conducted are Trichy, Salem, Vellore, Erode, Coimbatore, Theni, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Chennai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, etc. The tax accounts of those who have received tax refunds using fake expense accounts are being examined.
The Income Tax Department has said that intermediaries who audit income tax accounts using fake accounts and experts who audit income tax accounts are helping in this regard.
How does the fraud take place?
Income tax payers claim to have spent money on tax-deductible activities and claim back the tax money they did not spend.
In particular, they are involved in tax-deductible schemes such as refunding medical insurance premiums under Section 80D, receiving receipts for house rent payments under Sections 10 and 13A, paying kalsavi fees under Section 80C, and donating to political parties under Section 80 GGC, using fake expense receipts to evade tax.
Not only Tamil Nadu, but also states like Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand, and Assam are involved in such tax evasion activities.
